How On Sight is Changing the Conversation on Gun Violence and Mental Health
Gun violence is a leading cause of death among children and youth. On Sight is a groundbreaking performance intervention, solo play, and TV special that addresses youth gun violence and mental health. Written, performed, and produced by UCLA’s Dr. Micah Johnson, On Sight is a soul-shifting experience. It uses humor, raw emotion, and street culture to deliver a masterclass in conflict and stress management. On Sight is Dr. Johnson’s masterpiece, delivering the perfect fusion of high-quality science, writing, pedagogy, and performance. The world premiere of On Sight with DC Young Fly will occur on World Mental Health Day at 7:00 PM EST on Friday, October 10, 2025, at University Auditorium in Gainesville, Florida.
What is Dr. Micah Johnson’s Connection to Gainesville?
On Sight was inspired and birthed by Gainesville City Manager, Ms. Cynthia Curry. She called on Dr. Johnson to help address conflict and stress among youth in Gainesville. Dr. Johnson teamed up with legendary comedian DC Young Fly to create a one-of-a-kind, solo play exclusively for the Gainesville community. This show is unlike any other show anywhere in the world. It combines comedy, drama, education, counseling, and group therapy – in a way that is hilarious and inspirational. Gainesville is also Dr. Johnson’s second home, and he has lived here for over 12 years. Despite living in LA and touring around the country, he still regularly returns home to Gainesville. Instead of launching in a big city like New York, Atlanta, or Los Angeles, Dr. Johnson made a bold and intentional choice—he chose Gainesville for the live taping and launching of the TV special.

Why does Dr. Micah Johnson use solo plays and performances for youth gun Violence Prevention and Mental Health Solutions?
UCLA’s Dr. Micah Johnson developed the performance intervention model that he calls the “gummy vitamin”—taking the medicine and the nutrition and putting it into a format that is digestible, enjoyable, and fun. This means transforming research-backed content on mental health, stress management, and overall wellness into a format that is rooted in culture and creativity—funny, real, raw, entertaining, moving, and artistic. On Sight tackles the urgent issues of youth gun violence and mental health, using comedy, dramatic acting, raw emotions, youth culture, and street culture to connect directly with the communities most impacted. This is not a lecture, not a traditional play, and not just a comedy show—it is all of those things and more, blended into something completely unique.

How will On Sight become a TV special?
Dr. Johnson’s vision is for On Sight to be a TV special that can reach youth and families in communities impacted by violence around the world. Alumni and producers from BET and Netflix heard about On Sight and encouraged Dr. Johnson to aim high and pitch to major TV platforms in Hollywood. We will film the live event in Gainesville and pitch it to the big platforms: Netflix, HBO, Disney+, etc. To do this, we need an amazing audience, you, strong supporters, also you, and support from industry insiders.

What do you need?
We need youth! This event was created specifically for youth ages 18-25 and the families, friends, and mentors who support them. We are calling on all students, parents, guardians, mentors, leaders, big homies, big brothers, and big sisters—to RSVP and show up. Plan a group trip, a family outing, or a community gathering. We need youth to be in the building, especially any young person who has been dealing with negative thoughts, conflict, trauma, and mental health struggles. We want all youth to be a part of this experience.
Is there anything else I should know?
Thanks to the City of Gainesville and Dr. Johnson, this event is completely free, but registration is required. We will be filming live, so come with lots of energy, ready to laugh, ready to participate, and ready to have a great time. This is your chance to be in the audience for a TV special—a show that we will be pitching to HBO, Netflix, Disney+, and other major platforms.
Doors open at 7:00 PM on Friday, October 10, 2025. The show will start immediately, so please come early or on time. Bring your crew with you!
