    “I am a professor, author, scientist, activist, speaker, performance artist, award-winning poet, & music enthusiast with 10+ published studies, two books, & $2.2M from NIH. I aim to empower disadvantaged children through education, science, art, and relentless compassion.” -Micah Dr. Micah E. Johnson is a sociologist trained in criminology and substance misuse epidemiology. He serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mental Health Law and Policy at USF. Dr. Johnson’s research centers around childhood trauma, behavioral health, and juvenile justice. He has been awarded over two million dollars in research grants by the National Institutes of Health. His research has been cited by the New York Times, Senator Bernie Sanders, and others. He has been an advocate for social justice for the past 15 years. Dr. Johnson trains, speaks, and teaches internationally on topics related to trauma, poverty, anti-racism, and sustainable peace. He is a pioneer of forensic sociology, serving in the state and federal court system as an expert witness and mitigation specialist where he leverages the science of trauma, disadvantage, and substance misuse to empower the justice system to make more informed decisions. Dr. Johnson’s goal is to support his philanthropic and social justice initiatives through securing a partnership with a major streaming platform (Netflix, HBO, Disney, Amazon, etc.) to produce the Never Had a Friend documentary and film. Dr. Johnson’s vision is to raise $50,000 in private funds for the SMART Lab, a PhD preparation program for gifted Black, Latinx, Native American, and historically underrepresented students. Dr. Johnson’s dream is to write stories about the extraordinary people who survive trauma, poverty, and marginalization.

Dr. Micah E. Johnson is an associate professor of Family Medicine at UCLA. He is a medical sociologist focused on the social determinants of behavioral health, particularly addiction and violence. Dr. Johnson has authored 30 scientific articles and multiple books, including Never Had a Friend and The Police Youth Dialogues. He was awarded four million dollars in active research grants from the National Institutes of Health. His work has been cited by the New York Times, ESPN, Senator Bernie Sanders, Charlamagne tha God, and others. He is the recipient of the 2023 Outstanding Research Achievement Award at the University of South Florida and the 2023 Community Peacebuilder of the Year Award from the River Phoenix Center for Peacebuilding. Dr. Johnson's research and advocacy have helped reduce decades of prison sentences and overturn death penalties for individuals with behavioral health needs in over 100 capital and felony cases throughout the country.
